BPOS Exchange things you think you can’t do but really can

BPOS Exchange things you think you can’t do but really can;

Company wide footers (Disclaimers)

How, Open a service request in the Admin Centre supplying them with the footer you require

Note: You are restricted to ASCII characters (no return carriages) and can only be assigned to Authoritative BPOS domains (all users migrated) and not specific users, OU’s, Descriptions, Job title.*

*NB: 12-10-10 Microsoft can now add company disclaimers to ‘external relay’ domains (coexsisting), a service request to Microsoft Online Support (using the Admin Portal) will need to be raised.

Transfer more than 1GB worth

One of the reason you will see this documented is because when BPOS Exchange was originally launched the Mailbox size was limited to 1GB, by default an email account can now be 25GB (you can add to this as well), however you should make sure your mailboxes are less than 1GB for performance reason (sending to BPOS and caching to client) and in some circumstances large mailboxes could become corrupt while transferring.

NB: Experence with using Powershell is that the execution time is much slower and adding additional servers will improve the speed

Transfer speed limited to 2GB per hour

I have found that the transfer speed is only limited by your Internet connection, that’s not to say in the future it won’t be.

UPDATE: the above only seems to relate to the BPOS Migration Wizard Tool (testing on a 20Mbit Line), Using the powershell scripts seems to be limited to the 2GB per hour, to improve the migration speed would mean using multiple servers.

Synchronise your local domain user passwords

There are now several third-party tools, which allow you to sync your user passwords into BPOS, the following is list of the few I know;

http://www.messageops.com/passwordsync.html

https://sites.google.com/a/cloudtoolkit.com/apps/tools/auth-magic-for-microsoft-online

NB: MS does not support these

Disabled Password expiry

How, Open a service request in the Admin Centre asking for this to be disabled

SMTP Relay

When BPOS Exchange was originally released SMTP relay was not enabled as of August 2010 the was enabled

Fax and SMS

There is now a third-party tool by fenestrae, which allows you to integrate Fax, and SMS send

NB: MS does not support this
